LIMA, Peru – The United States announced that it is coordinating with the Catholic Church in Cuba to distribute humanitarian aid intended to support those affected by Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba.
The U.S. Department of State, through its Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, reported on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter) that the aid amounts to three million dollars in humanitarian assistance that will go directly to those most affected.
“Our prayers are with the brave Cuban people,” the post emphasizes, which was also shared by the official account of the U.S. Embassy in Havana.
The news comes just a few days after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on social media that his country was «prepared to offer immediate humanitarian aid to the Cuban people affected by the hurricane,» only to be rejected by high-ranking officials of the Castro regime.
The issue arises amid a devastating situation in the eastern part of the island, where, although authorities have yet to provide a detailed official damage report, there are numerous images of destroyed homes, entire communities under water, people who have lost everything, and emergency evacuations.
The powerful hurricane struck Cuba as a Category 3 storm from the early hours until the afternoon of Wednesday, October 29, specifically in the eastern region.
On Thursday, November 2, the U.S. Department of State also issued a statement reaffirming its willingness to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to the Cuban people affected by Hurricane Melissa. Washington expressed solidarity with the affected families and reiterated that its support is directed at the Cuban citizens, not the regime.
The statement emphasized that the United States remains committed to human rights and the freedom of the Cuban people, and that it will continue to coordinate with international partners and humanitarian organizations to ensure that any aid reaches those most in need in a transparent and effective manner.

The aftermath of Melissa has worsened Cuba’s already severe economic crisis, which continues to subject the population to prolonged blackouts, as well as shortages of fuel, medicine, and food.
