Die 14-jährige Maria (Lea van Acken) ist in einer streng katholischen Familie aufgewachsen und steht kurz vor ihrer Firmung. Ihr Glaube bildet einen wichtigen Teil ihrer Persönlichkeit. Er richtet sich nach Grundsätzen, die Maria in der Messe vermittelt bekommt - und im Firmunterricht der Priesterbruderschaft, der die Familie des Mädchens angehört. Eine wichtige Rolle bei der Indoktrinierung Marias hat Pfarrer Weber (Florian Stetter). Die Lehre des Geistlichen ist fundamentalistisch und streng konservativ; die Bruderschaft lehnt alles Moderne ab, sieht den Menschen vollständig im Dienst Gottes. Doch Marias Glaube steht im krassen Kontrast zu ihrem Schulalltag. Dort ist sie die große Außenseiterin, die von ihren Mitschülern belächelt wird. Nur Mitschüler Christian (Moritz Knapp) ist fasziniert von der Konsequenz, mit der seine Klassenkameradin ihren Glauben lebt. Und je stärker Maria zwischen ihren zwei Lebenssphären aufgerieben wird, umso mehr wächst ihre Entschlossenheit, sich voll und ganz der Religion zu verschrieben ...
