Obviously it was going to be a bit difficult to follow in the tails of arthouse hit In the Realm of the Senses and when producer Anatole Dauman wanted an other erotic art film Oshima did what Oshima did his whole career, he refused to repeat himself and gave him something totally different. Part erotic tragedy (without the graphic sex this time) and part haunting ghost story. More a tale of guilt and unattainable romances and carnal pleasure in a society that closes in on the two lovers.
The trailer obviously wanted to extenuate the fact it follows In the Realm of the Senses, that it contains sex and that it has the classic genre mold of a horror film. They try, but this film isn't an easy sale, but despite the fact, it's easily one of Oshima's best. Features a score by Toru Takemitsu and winner of the best director prize at the Cannes Film Festival 1978.
